Civic engagement = a powerful tool
| Gaspar Eniko |Last week I just found out about a project of our City Council, which aims to extinct one main road besides the Somes river – in order to resolve the traffic in the central zone of our city. However, the project was signed and decisions were taken without public debates and besides it also meant to ruin a part of the green space around the river…
The news angered me and when I saw, that a petition is organised by the common work of NGO’s, I decided to sign the petition immediatly… and then I waited. It happened several times until now, that I signed petitions without seeing any immediate results. Something else happened this time!
Today in the morning the first news that I saw was that the major of our city stopped the project and decided to organise a debate with the public and with relevant NGO members – in order to revise this project according to the needs of the city inhabitants!
YEEES!
This is the first time, that I can see with my own eyes, that civic engagement is at the end… a powerful tool! Hopefully the project will reflect the needs of the city inhabitants and that nature won’t have to suffer!
